DPS: Spices

I haven't taken photos for a Digital Photography School weekly assignment since March, but it's high time I got back in the habit!

This week's assignment is "Spices".

Counted cross-stitch on our kitchen wall

For textile enthusiasts, here is a cross-stitch that I completed 20 years ago. I still love it, plus it was fun to stitch.

Spice rack lowered

While my spice rack isn't especially photogenic, it is very useful. It holds lots of spices and keeps them in position. When it's lowered I can find the spices I need.

Spice rack back in position in cabinet

When the spice rack is raised, it's out of the way and the cabinet door can close.

Spice bins in the West India Goods Store in Salem, MA

At Salem Maritime National Historic Site, several buildings from early Salem are preserved. Salem was a center of trade in the 1600's and 1700's.

The West India Goods Store is representative of early stores that sold valuable and exotic goods including tea, coffee and spices that sea captains brought into Salem.

Choosing my favorite photo for this assignment is easy....I saved the best for last!

My mom made that same exact cross stitch! It's a great one! :-) That spice store looks like a lot of fun. I bet it smells good too.

Ah, spices. I really like your pull down shelf.

I hadn't thought about it until I saw your post, but we have three spice racks/drawers. Our kitchen is in three parts, all connected: main kitchen, butler's pantry, bread room. In each of the areas we have a spice rack and/or spice drawers for the items used in that area. This wasn't planned, it just turned out that way when we put things away near where they were used.

Your embroidered spices piece is very pretty. :)

Best,
Lois

It looks like you have spice cabinet overload! ;-) Spice racks never seem to hold enough do they? Love the last photo too. The place must smell heavenly.

Ian is the king of spices. He's always finding one more that he must have. We picked up Ancho Chile Powder when we stopped in Susanville today for lunch!

I like the last picture too. Our spice cabinet would not fare well in a photo.

I am called the queen of bland by my husband because I don't use spices very often. I do like having them tho and the West Indies store looks wonderful!

You are leading me astray. I followed the link to Salem Historic because my grandfather's family lived in Salem and are reputed to have made their money in sail. Then I followed the link to the Boston Archives and found they are located within a stone's throw of where I grew up in Belmont. I hope I have time to follow these links further during my visit this summer.

You guys definitely make me feel better about the state of my spice rack, and about how many spices I've accumulated!! I was thinking that I have an unnatural number of spices...but apparently not!

Janet....sorry for leading you astray into the history of Salem! There's a lot that's interesting in this part of the world!! (And in every part of the world really!)
