Things that Make Me Smile: 3 Weird Wintry Wonders

I love icicles! I get really excited when I see them - and drive Jim crazy by pointing them out when we're out and about.

I especially like giant icicles (sometimes found hanging off bridges) or long rows of icicles.

But even these three on our eaves make me happy.

Can you see the slight pattern in the snow? As the snow melts, sometimes you can see burrows made by voles. I love thinking about life below the snow that we don't get to see, even if furry little rodents don't make me smile!

The pattern of the burrows could inspire weaving, or knitting. (Similar to this Faux Bois knitting pattern inspired by wood grain.)

I love how sunny days make leaves on the snow start to melt down into it!

Are there any weird wintry things that make you smile??

Grrr Voles! I hate em! The front lawn is such a mess in the spring. Maybe I'll watch Caddyshack for some tips on how to deal with them.

By the way Sue, have you ever been to Harrisville Designs in NH? Carol and I took a ride out a few weeks back. Now she is thinking of one of their weaving classes. I hope I don't have to clear out a room for a loom! :/

Be well!

You're putting things in a new light -- cool! (Literally, COOL). I love the icicles, but I just finished reading "The Lovely Bones." I don't want to spoil the ending, in case you haven't read it. But, it makes me think twice now when I walk by them. Hope you're having a warm and smile-full day.

SUNFLOWERS always make me smile...and puppies.

For me it's the way the snow piles up precariously on our fences and railings. It's amazing that it will pile up so high! I'm also fascinated by the way the barest warmth fromt the sun will make my neighbours roof steam!

As you have commented on my blog, winter is different on the CA central coast. I just noticed today that the Japanese magnolia is starting to bloom and the large pink blossom against the wintry gray sky made me smile. Also, this winter I have a small flock of chestnut-backed chickadees that frequent the feeders and the fountain. They also make me smile.

It makes this grew-up-in-the-North girl smile to see how her southern-raised kids think it's time to sled as soon as there are a few snowflakes in the air!

I share your fascination with icicles...I have always loved them. My daughter asked not long ago what icicles were; with our recent cold snap, she finally got to see some!

This whole winter has been weird for us-we usually lanquish in the warmth(70's) and offer sanctuary to the frozen northern family members-not join them!

Sorry so many of you are having cold weather too! I like to imagine that the south is a land of no icicles ever. (Although I'm glad your daughter got to see some Marsel!)

Harrisville Designs - love it there!! Love their yarn. And have heard lots of good things about their classes from people I know who've studied there. Beginning Weaving especially comes highly recommended.

Kelly, thanks for reminding me why we all dream of California!!!

It's getting close to freezing today....excellent for icicle formation!

Oh now your going to make me think! I like the beautiful blue color of the snow when it first falls and it seems to sparkle. I also like the fact that there is little mice running around below. My Paisley like to run along the snow thinking that she just might get one!

Icicles - I totally forget about them until I am outside and I see them hanging off a building...or from the bottom of my car.

Icicles are gorgeous - and sometimes they are so clear -

Back when we had our dog (lab/sheperd mix) he loved plowing through the drifts head first, so I loved the drifts with wedges cut into them when he was out playing.

I love icivles too, and as a kid, I loved to eat them. Patterns in the snow fascinate me too, I never tire of looking at them. There are so many shades of white, and the colors are so subtle.

You guys are giving me new appreciation for snow and winter! Glad I'm not the only icicle fan out there!!

I do confess that as a child, I preferred to eat snow rather than eat icicles. It used to taste so good! (I really haven't tried it in years, and it doesn't seem so appealing now.)

I love the image of a dog knocking wedges in the snow. Too cool!

I agree with the other icicle fans - I think icicles are beautiful! I love to see them lined up together - especially when there's a group of all different sizes!
