Red Scarf Finished!

I put the hours waiting on a mountaintop for hawks to fly past to good use finishing the red scarf for my niece K.

What I loved about this project:
  • Beautiful yarn - soft with gorgeous colors
  • Sometimes a small project (compared to a sweater) is just the thing
  • The pattern has 3 rows that are just knit or purl and one fancy row. Just the amount of variety I need!
  • It's for my niece K! That makes it fun to begin with!

What I learned:

Sometimes my first instinct is my best. I swatched 5 patterns with this yarn, but K and I both liked the Misty Garden pattern the best. That was the first pattern I chose.

Because of the pattern, each end of the scarf is different. I thrive on variety, so I'm fine with that.

Other knitters consider that a flaw.

The end where I started to knit.

The end where I finished.

The scarf looks good on a hemlock tree and will look even better on my niece!

Project Specifics

Yarn: Misti Alpaca
100% Baby Alpaca Hand Dyed
Worsted Weight 4 ply

Color: EZ03 (Spanish Rose)

How much?: Just a touch over 1 skein. (1 skein = 100 grs = 218 yards)
1 skein was probably about 54 inches of scarf.

Pattern: Misty Garden by Jo Sharp in the book Scarf Style

Needle: Size 9 US

Gauge: 18 rows and 24 stitches = 4 inches in pattern stitch

Finished Size: 7 x 59"

Possibly my favorite finishing instructions ever: "Block lightly, if desired."

I remember the swatching! It looks beautiful. The pattern and yarn compliment each other perfectly.
Great job and I know she's going to love it.
I'm going to have to keep my eyes peeled for some of that yarn. I love alpaca and am dreaming of some leg warmers. Like I have tons of time to knit these days.
How many projects can one start, let me count the bags......

Thanks Birgitta!

If you love alpaca, you'll love this yarn!! They also have a chunky size that might be better for leg warmers. (Or maybe I just think that because my feet are really cold at the moment!)

The one caveat is that I think I read that alpaca tends to stretch - so for something fitted that might be a problem.

I had so much knitting time on my trip....but no knitting project. Whoops!!

The scarf is bea-u-ti-ful! I LOVE the scarf not being the same pattern throughout. That creates interest for me! (Ooo Theresa, I haven't thought about leg warmers since high school!)

It looks beautiful; I love the subtle color changes in the yarn-a perfect marriage of pattern and yarn!

Yum, yum, looks good enough to eat. And the fact that it doesn't all look the same is very appealing to me. So Un-Target and I do like my Target stores - you know what I mean though!

That's a great scarf and the edges don't roll. Perfect marriage of yarn and pattern - you're right.

Thanks for the scarf kudos you guys!!! I was looking at it again today - and I like it even better in person.

My knitting group even gave it their seal of approval today. Maybe the differing ends only bothered them in principle, or maybe they were so distracted by the beauty of the yarn that the ends weren't on their minds!!

Can't wait to give it to my niece!!
